What is the name of your state? Minnesota

I bought a house on June 27th, 2006. The home inspection was done 3 weeks prior and everything was okay. I had an addition put on last month, and the contractor found severe hail damage to the roof. The former owners confirmed that a hail storm came through on June 21st, 2006, but they weren't aware of the damage. I am friends with the former owner (Greg) who just now tried to file a claim on my behalf with State Farm, who Greg had his homeowners insurance policy with. My home insurance is currently with another carrier, who won't cover the loss because they didn't insure the property at the time. This is the only storm that came through with the potential of hail, and the home is only 1 year old, so there is no doubt about the time of loss.

Is State Farm legally liable to pay the claim for my home, even though their insured no longer owns the property? Please help!

A cliam CAN be filed after the fact, but I'd want to know why the professional that I paid didn't catch the roof damage.

Hi. OP said he bought the house 6-27 & inspection was 3 weeks prior (around 6-6) - the hail storm was 6-21 (apparently after the inspection).

Thanks, Betty.

OP: Per the policy contract, you generally can file a claim WAY after the actual damage occurred. Obviously, its easier to do so right when it happens, though. I do not see why State Farm would not pay for the hail damage. The only problem that I see is the deductible. The former owner will be responsible for the deductible on the policy. How mcuh damage is there? What IS the deductible?
