Cause I thought there was always a free service offered to the people that can't afford a lawyer.

Not in a divorce. You're thinking of the public defender who is appointed by the Court for people accused of a crime and unable to afford representation. Divorce lawyers don't work for free.

In CA it would be more effective to do a Google search for <county> superior court for self-help resources...
