Not in a divorce. You're thinking of the public defender who is appointed by the Court for people accused of a crime and unable to afford representation. Divorce lawyers don't work for free.

In some states, in some areas, there are some discount or free legal services that might be able to help you. You need to crack open the phone book and look for legal services.

Since you have online access, I'd recommend that you start with your state's website. They generally will have information about legal aid or reduced cost attorneys available to folks with hardships.

In CA it would be more effective to do a Google search for <county> superior court for self-help resources...
