What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Arkansas
The adjustment service that contracts with my insurance company sent a person out to inspect water damage to my floors caused by a plumbing leak.
The adjuster at first claimed not to have seen anything wrong with the subfloor from underneath the house.
Since both the carpet and pad had been soaked from below and the tenant was reporting moldy odors, I asked adjuster to pull back carpet & inspect the subfloor that way.
He refused citing liability issues for himself.
The tenant and I then pulled it up ourselves which revealed dark wet areas.
Adjuster then decided that he would report 50% of subfloor needed replacement in that room.
Before leaving he gave me his card, telling me to call him if more extensive damage is found when entire carpet/pad is removed and that he'd 'help get more money' for my claim.
My question is whether I should work with this adjuster in the likely event more damage is found or report the situation now to my insurance company, since he was talking as if he was going to report that the carpet just needing to be cleaned until I essentially forced him to inspect further.
I'd like a better understanding of the possible consequences either way.
Thank you

You need to be talking to the claim rep who sent the adjuster.

It's not the field adjuster that makes the decisions, it's the company claim rep.

So, yes, report your issues to the claim rep ASAP.

Any additional work by the field adjuster will be assigned by the claim rep.

Most insurance companies hire outside adjusting companies to investigate most claims made by policyholders, particularly lower value claims and particularly in geographical areas where the insurance company does not have a major presence.

As with most things, the quality of the people doing the outsourced claims adjustment work varies, although remember they are hired by the insurance companies -- not the policyholders -- so guess where their loyalty lies. In major claims, therefore, your hiring a "public adjuster" who represents the claimant (for a fee, of course) would often make sense.

Although the claims adjuster initially failed to spot the extent of the claimed damage, and you called him or her on it. it seems as once you pulled up the carpet things started going right. The adjuster's response was take this and if the damage is more severe, let me know and I'll reconsider and make another adjustment. That sounds reasonable under the circumstances.

Calling to complain that he failed to get it right the first time isn't going to help you, and might antagonize the adjuster if things get back to him or her (as they typically do). My suggestion would be don't volunteer and badmouth the adjuster, and wait to see how things turn out.
