What is the name of your state? New York

Hi,

I have co-signed a car for my father in the year 1996. It got repossessed in late 1997.

Since then, my father has been receiving letters from the debt collectors til now but they have been sending to where I live. I did receive letters too under my name in 1997-1999. Since then, I just receive letters for my father stating that there's a judgment and offer to do a settlement.

I would like to eliminate this debt which is way too much for me to handle. Can I simply use the SOL on this? I believe the SOL is 6 years in NY.

I visited a lawyer and is charging me $750.oo. I 'feel' this is way too much to handle my case esp when he didnt know when I mention "SOL". He replied asking "What's SOL"?

How much is the average costs to handle my case?

I'm really trying to get back on my feet. If I do get a bank account open, I dont want them to freeze it. Also, I'm very concerned if they're gonna garnish my paychecks. By doing so, would I know? I mean, they have to take me to court then garnish my paycheck ?

Plz advise, I dunno how to handle this all.
