What is the name of your state? Utah
Hi all, I just recently got off of a 2 year active duty military deployment, i was attending school at Westminster college, located in salt lake city, ut, at the time. When i returned to utah, back on army reservist status, after the 2 yrs. I began to feal symptoms of major depression asscotiated with loss while i was away the 2 years. I was having a hard time in class, and conentrating and sleep was horrible. I went to both a lic clinical social worker and also a lic therapist, and was diagnosed with major depression, and put on anti depressants.
My grades began to suffer, and fearing i would end the semester with F's, i told my therapist i was going to withdraw from the semester, because a W on my transcript was better then F's. I went to the college, and wrote a request for a medical withdrawl, and asking that the college not charge me tuition for the semester due to my inability to preform academicly. I spoke with 2 of the memebrs of the college appeals board before i wrote the letter asking them what would happen and they blew me off telling me i doubt an appeals will work and you will owe the college a full sem tuition regardless.
I could not afford emotionaly to stay in college for the semester, so i withdrew and wrote the appeals letter with a request for medical withdraw and included a letter from both my therapist stating it was nesscasary for me to withdraw due to depression and not to charge me for the semster.
I recived a letter from the college stating that they would give me W's on my transcript instead of F's, but i was denyed tuition reimbursment. I now owe the college $8000 in tuition and a hold put on my official transcrpts. In the student hand book it says you can appeal tuition charges due to medical reasons. It does not state weather you can or cannot appeal further after a desicion has been made by the original appeals committee.
Can i appeal further up the chain? Or appeal to people past the appeals board? I just dont understand how a board of 4 ppl, one is an acting dean of students, one is the head of financial aid, can make a MEDICAL desicion about a student without any medical background? How can they tell me that i could or could not have finished the semester? And why do i still owe the money to the college, when i did not finish due to medical reasons outside of my control? Please help!!?
