What is the name of your state? NJ

I have been married to my husband for 6 months now and just found out that our marriage may not be valid. My husband (a US Citizen for over 20 years) was married to a women who was/is a resident of the Dominican Republic (not sure if she is still considered a resident because she received a conditional visa to come to the US after the 18 month waiting period was over). They are now divorce since Nov 2004 (women is still in US until she goes before the INS), but the divorce was filed in the Dominican Republic. My husband never filed for divorce in NJ. Neither party was present in court when the divorce was finalized, the women did not consent to the divorce and my husband does not recall giving POA to the lawyer. As far as I can tell, our marriage is not valid because the three above requirements were not met, but would it be considered legal since they got married in the Dominican Republic and his wife may or may not be a resident. Is my marriage valid in NJ? If not, what steps do I need to take with the county we were married in?

Thanks so much for your help and have a great day.
