What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

I am a university 4th year student. This summer I took some some summer course which was equivalent to the required course I need during the school year. Or at least it was, till they changed the policy last year. However I did not find that out till about July when I went in and they told me it wont be counted toward my credits. And the thing is, I was deleted off the course system in May (for late registration), so I went to the adviser to have that course added back in. During then they did not tell me anything about it not being counted toward the required courses i need. So now I wasted the entire summer commuting school and I am out $1200 for tuition. I went to talked to them few days ago and they simply said they did not force me to take the course and that it was not their responsibility to check. So, now I cant help but to feel that I got ripped off. Is there anything I can do in a legal perspective?

And of course, it never occured to you to check and confirm that the course would be accepted towards your required course? You took it for granted that it was their responsibility to hold your hand and read your mind and bring to your attention that a course that, for all they knew, you were taking just because you were interested in the topic, would not be counted towards your required courses?

Tell me, were they supposed to do this for all the however many thousand students they have, or just for you? Naturally they have the time and resources to provide unsolicited course counseling to everyone so that the students don't have to think for themselves.

I did check it, on the course website it is stated as antirequisites and it is the only Math courses in the summer, so there wasnt a choice in whether I should take this one or another math

You don't have a leg to stand on. You were no longer a student in that program. Once you restarted the program, the requirements reset to whatever it is when you restarted.

This is NOT the fault of the school.

sorry I guess you misunderstood somewhere, I did not restart the program. I simply took the courses that was said to be equivalent to in regular semester in summer. And when I went into their office to have the course added, they did not tell me about that it could not be counted toward my requirement. Till 2 months later upon completing the courses, they told me it wont be counted. So basically I went into their office, they have my files and everything infront of them in the computer (I know that because they added me onto the system manually) and did not tell me I would be wasting my money and time upon taking the courses. I cant helped but to feel like i got screwed :(

No, I think you misunderstood somewhere.

It was NOT the responsibility of the school to figure out why you were taking the course. It was NOT the responsibilty of the school to determine if the course you were registering for would count towards your required courses. It was NOT the responsibility of the school to bring to your attention that it would not.

It was YOUR responsibility to ASK the school if it would count, and to take other courses if it would not.

If you got screwed, you screwed yourself in assuming that the school had responsibilities it did not have.
