What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas

Hi,

I'm a legal student alien (aged 25). I was recently adopted by a married couple, both US Citizens, for purposes of inheritance.

I just wanted to know if immigration law permits me to get permanent residency or citizenship.

Appreciate your support.

Thank you.

Not as a rule, no. You can't obtain immigration benefits based upon an adult adoption.

Dogmatique, Thank you.

I understand that adult adoption does not automatically make me a citizen.

But, since I am an adopted son (age 26), my parents should be able to file for my green card. Is that correct?

Please advise.

No, you are misunderstanding.

As an adult you would only qualify for residency (if based upon you being the adopted child of US citizens) if you had been adopted before you were 18 or if the petition for residency had been filed before your 18th birthday.

Adopting you now would not entitle you to any immigration benefit. Sorry.

If you are still unsure, by all means call around and have a consultation with an immigration attorney - as you know Immigration Law can be extremely complex and it might be worth your time just to make sure :)

(It also shouldn't cost too much)
