My mother has rented her home in Missouri for about 18 years. She received a letter from her landlord a couple of weeks ago informing her that she needed to be out by the end of July. (The landlord is needing to move his elderly parents closer to him in order to take care of them - he is going to move them into my mom's house.) My question is: Is my mother still obligated to pay rent for the month of July since an eviction at no fault of hers has taken place?

My response:

Yes, of course. Each day that your mother uses and resides in someone else's property, she owes rent money - - despite the fact that she's being asked to leave. And, if she becomes a "hold over" tenant, she will owe for each day beyond July 31st; but that's another story, concerning different laws and damages the landlord may be further entitled to receive.
