What is the name of your state? Texas

A couple of months ago, i was accused of theft from JC Penney, and I ended up going to court for it, and now, i have to do some community service.

10 days ago, JC Penney's representative law firm mailed me a letter saying that if i dont pay them 500$ soon, I'd end up in court via the "texas theft liability act, texas civ. prac.&rem. code 134.001 et seq., JC Penny"

What should i do? should i pay, ignore them, or just tell them to go for it?

Not going to bother looking it up at the momoent but let it be known to you that many states do have a civil penalty statute that allows just what you are experiencing.

In some states, 10X the damages are allowed. Some state like to limit to 2 or 3 hundred dollars.

I suspect Texas does have such a statute and the claim is probably allowable. With that said, it is more up to you than JCPenneys to worry about the situation.

Texas stqtuates can besearched online. he already gave you the statute number to look-up.

A little personal research should enlighten you.
