I'm from California. My issue is a simple one. I stopped a long distance account. They sent me a bill. The next day, I received a bill from a collection agency. Two weeks later, the long distance co. called me about payment. I asked them if they were a collection agency they said no. I asked them if they sent me to collections...they said no. Two weeks later, I received a bill from them as well as the collection agency. I have again received another bill from each. Is this illegal? And if so, what kind of recourse do I have. In addition, they are holding my 800 number hostage until payment...this number is how I do business.

Sounds like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. If you're still getting billed by the long distance company, then deal with them and pay them. See if you can find out if they really HAVE sent your account to this collection agency. If they did, then somebody has goofed up. If they hired the CA, THEY have to call them off. Have you asked the CA why they are collecting on this account ??
