What is the name of your state? north carolina

someone in my family has been accused of going through the dumpster behind a name brand grocery store and digging a grocery bag out and then proceeding into the store and filling the bag with meats. when approached by 2 stock boys for a receipt sam (not the real name) sat the bag down and went out the door. the stock boys then pointed sam out to the manager (janet) and she did not call the police. this was to have happened about a month ago but janet told her father about it this past tuesday and told him to tell the person not to go back to the store. janet had not spoken to sam until yesterday (thursday) when confronted by sam. sam is disabled and does not do his own grocery shopping. my mother does his grocery shopping and must of his cooking. sam does not even have transportation other than my mom or brothers. sam did not do this and has never done anything like this in his life and states that he did not do this. especially since he has not been in this, let alone any other, store for a very long time. he does not like crowds and stays away from places like that. the store does not have it on tape who done this since they reuse the tapes daily, the 2 stock boys who were supposedly to have seen this and point this out to janet no longer works there and that the janet said that if it wasn't him that it was someone who looks like him.
however, this rumor has now spread throughout the community and makes sam look like a thief. janet said that she has never heard so much about an incident as she has about this one. she lives in the same community and is also cousins with sam. although no charges have been filed, is there anything that can be done since janet told this to someone outside of the workplace and to someone not involved and now it has spread and did not attempt to try to talk to sam, whom she assumed was the person they saw at the store. sam still states that it was not him and it is not like that person to do anything like this, i have know this person all my life.

there is no proof that sam was the one who done this, which he wasn't.
is there anything that can be done?

That was about as confusing as humanly possible. I wasn't sure which "person" was which... Perhaps you could use name substitutes to clarify? Like person A and B, or Bob and Jane?

No. The bottom line is that the manager can prohibit the 'person' (whoever that is in your rambling and confusing post), from entering his store.
As for defamation.... there isn't any as the owner has the right to say or exclude the 'person'.... and you have provided NOTHING to show anyone was damaged.

Your own statement ("it is not like that person to do anything like this, i have know this person all my life") shows that no damage occurred.
