Recently, we had changed our ISP to one that provided free service because we had been going over our allowed time. So, we switched and the number that we were dialing was over 15 miles (we were unaware) and resulting in a phonebill over $4,000. We have tried talking to the phone company as well as the ISP. Is there any hope??

I have heard of this problem.... must have been Freewwweb.com!!

If Freewwweb.com, they claim that the software you used to install from was an illegal copy (why does that makes a difference on a free ISP??).

Due to this, they claim that your recourse is with the supplier of the software.

Also, I don't believe that the ISP ever made any claim as to free phone calls to access, just that the ISP service is free. Their statement re: this issue can be seen at: http://home.freewwweb.com/statement.html

From the statement, I assume that the software was modified to 'appear' to be a local call, when in fact it may have been bounced to one of those 'pay per minute' services. If this is true, your complaint should be with the software 'hacker' and not with the ISP.

(Disclosure: This writer uses freewwweb.com as one of his providers. And no, I am not necessarily happy with their service.)
