Itemize V/z Standard Deduction

This is my first posting. I have a basic question. I am a married, filing jointly, only one person working, family. My gross income in 2007 was 48000 max and my deductible amount so far is approx 17,000. Is itemized deduction good for me or standard deduction? when is it good to file as itemize and when it is good to file as standard? Thanks.What is the name of your state?
