What is the name of your state? Virginia
Hello, I live in Arlington, Virginia (Crystal City - Washington D.C. metro area). Very recently, I was informed of a rent increase in my apartment building where my rent is increasing roughly 23 percent (which amounts to a couple hundred/month increase) which I think is unfair, especially since I was only notified of this a couple weeks ago and the deadline for giving a 60-day notice was roughly a month ago. I had asked for what my new monthly rent would be mulitple times before the 60-day deadline and they kept telling me it wouldn't be available until later. Is this legal for them to do?? If I would have known the rent price was going to go up that much, I certainly would have informed them I was moving out BEFORE the 60-day notice!! I now have no choice but to renew my lease... leases at my apartment are renewable for any amount of months you wish but you pay a SIGNIFICANTLY higher price the less months you renew for (I believe the month-to-month rate is $500/month above what I'm currently paying).
If someone can give me advice as to whether or not my tenants can do this, that would be much appreciated... thanks!!!
