I"m a buliding manager for a highrise here in Hawaii. I manage this building now for 10 years...I have owner, Vacation units, Renters in this building.
I have a little problem with one of our owner...he goes around to other owners tell them I make to much money..what should be stopped..the board of directors should not pay me one penny more...He write a letter that I'm stupid, rude to owners and vacation guest, I don't to my job right etc.. and that I should be fired tomorow...well I'm not going to much into this letter right now...but how can I stop this owner for saying all this bad things...what is not true at all...This owner don't come to my office and complain, it is all done behind my back...my Baord of directors don't want to get in to it with him...well I cannot blame them...so any Ideal how I can handle this issue..oh this owner will not talk to me...he is smiling in my face like there is nothing wrong....Mahalo

Based on what you have posted, this is neither illegal discrimination nor illegal harassment. It is rude, it is unprofessional, and I don't think much of your Board of Directors for allowing it. But it is not illegal.

No More Bullies!

It is slander and defamation of character and it could potentially cost you your job. I would seek advice from your board of directors. Let them know that you understand their position with not wanting to get involved, but express your fears that he is causing them to lose faith in your ability to do your job. Ask them if they feel it would be appropriate for you to write him a letter stating that you are aware of his claims that you are not meeting his expectations as a building manager, and that you take your job very seriously and do not want to lose it. In the letter, ask him for some feedback or what you could do to improve or make the relationship between the two of you more to his liking. You should type this letter up and have the Board review it before sending it to the tenant, so that he can't take the letter to them complaining and catch them by surprise. Make sure that they are in agreement about the letter before hand and know exactly what is in it. Maybe the guy is just a grumpy old man with nothing better to do than stir up problems and snipe about people behind their backs, and when he realizes that he's been caught in the act and actually confronted about it, he will be embarrassed and stop torturing you and move on to some other poor hapless victim. If it continues after that, I would just make it known that if I lose my job over untrue things that someone is saying about me, then I will be suing them for slander, defamation of character and lost wages. That might finally scare him into shutting up, because a lot of lawyers do no settlement no fees arrangements which means it wouldn't cost you anything to take him to court, but his defense fees would be really high and there is a good chance that he would lose. I hate bullies. I'll write the letter for you if you want!! :D
