Joint Lease Expiring

My niece signed a joint apartment lease with a friend in Minnesota. The lease expires 12/31/00 but includes a clause continuing the lease on a month to month basis unless 30 days notice is given. My niece gave written notice that she would be moving out at the end of the stated lease term. The friend did not submit notice. Is my niece libel for anything at all if the roommate did not give notice and intends to stay in the apartment?

What is my niece's best option? Asking the roommate to give his 30 day notice also and get out of the lease, or asking him to give her a signed statement releasing her from any obligation.
