What is the name of your state? California

Note: I had originally posted this under bankruptcy before I saw this forum. Oops. :)

I have a judgement on my credit report from 1998. It was for an eviction that my now ex-wife received while I was on deployment in the Navy. When I came back the judgement had already been executed (or whatever you call it) because she failed to appear.

Anyway, I've been struggling to clean up the disaster she caused me in 1998. This judgement is the LAST negative thing on my credit report (well, the only thing keeping me from getting a credit card). However, the company that sued me (owner of the apartment building) is no longer in business or at least I haven't been able to find them anywhere. I've searched the internet, called the attorney's that represented them, even called the company that bought the apartment building from them in 2001. No one has any current contact information and the number listed on my credit report to contact them at has been disconnected.

So, my question is: what can I do? If I dispute it, I'm sure it will just stick because won't the CRA just check the court records? Or will they also try and contact the plaintiff? Am I stuck just waiting for the 7 years to expire (Apr 2005)? I was hoping to work out a deal with them to prove that I wasn't even in the country when the eviction occured and get it removed from my credit report.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I've NEVER been contacted by anyone to pay this debt. In fact, the manager of the apartment building let me move into a one bedroom after I got back from deployment even though my wife had been evicted. That was part of the reason I thought this was taken care of.
