Through my credit card company, who has a free service of tracking credit scores for their customers, I was notifed that my score had changed. I was horrified to see that it went down 100 points!! I immediately went and ordered a copy of my credit report and found that a judgement was filed against me four months ago and was just now showing on my credit report. I immediately started making phone calls and found out that it was from a hospital bill from March of 2001.

Now, during that time I was a single mother, a full-time student, and getting ready to begin employment part-time at Kmart. Obviously, I didn't have a lot of money, so after a few payments, I quit making payments and eventually forgot about it. Within the past three years, I have never been contacted in regards to this debt. I am not denying that it is mine, but I would like to make every effort to work with the creditor to settle the amount and vacate the judgement based on the fact that I was never served. Any suggestions on how to handle this to where it will work out to my benefit? By "my benefit," I simply mean that the judgement will be removed from my credit report without being refiled (which is why I want to propose a settlement).
