I just went to court for small claims, against my x-roommate. During the court proceedings, he proceeded to tell the jugde everything he didn't like about living with me. He mentioned that he had done work on my car in exchange for reduced rent, but that was untrue, he actually drove my car more than I did. There was nothing sexual between us, but he led the judge to seem that there was. The bottom line was I had receipts, and he did owe me money. Does the judge go by what was owed, or does she listen to irrelivant details of how awful our siruation was ??

The judge should consider all the facts placed before the court. This includes specific evidence (your documents) and the testimony of the parties (this is the verbal presentation). From the testimony, the court will determine credibility and will decide what testimoney she believes. This will go a long wasy to helping the court make a true and correct (hopefully) decision.
