it was a judgement lien for $1100. from 2001 - just found out about it while refinancing home the creditor now wants $2100. it was a credit card that we know nothing about

You see, before a judgement lien is awarded, there must first be a court hearing even if you failed to respond to the complaint. So it appears that you have not provided us with the whole story.
