Long story short, I have an abusive father. I just turned 18 and now I'd like to get out of dodge.

I was born overseas, on a military base in Germany. My parents do not have my birth certificate or my social security card.

They (probably) know I want to leave as soon as possible, but my father is adamant on keeping me at home forever. Yes I know it's weird. They have been putting off getting me papers I need to get my I.D. and I'm not sure what I can do to get them myself. My mother is saying she has to write the embassy in Germany to get my birth certificate, but she keeps putting it off. Apparently she has to go to a bank to get the request notarized, but again, she's taking her sweet time.

I have a friend I'm going to move in with, he and his family have offered me school, a car, a place to live, and most importantly, a place away from my father.

Question: What can I do to get my papers?

Find out what you need to do to get them yourself. You're an adult now, you're going to have to act an adult.

Go to social security, find out how to get your ss card.

Is that a joke? I'm on a Law forum, asking how.

Seems like I'm "acting like an adult."

One just doesn't magically know how to get these things, so viola, i'm here.

Yes, you're here.

Although you should be at the social security office, where they give out social security cards...

and since you know your mother needed to contact the German embassy, you should have been calling them...

you already had all the answers, however, for some strange reason, you wanted someone here to do it instead.

Do you have ANY ID at all? That's where the questions start. Because you will need something to get your SSC.

Crikes, give the MISINFORMATION a break. He doesn't need to contact the German embassy and they won't help anyhow.

Since your parent(s) were in the Military, whether you were born in a military hospital, or in a German hospital, the record of your birth should have been transmitted to the US embassy/consulate. You can obtain your birth certificate (well not really a birth certificate, but a document as good as that unless you intend to run for president some day) by sending off $30 to the State Department. Here is a nice site with the procedure...

Do you not have a SSN? How have your parents been doing taxes? They were required to obtain that for you in order to file with you as a dependent. If they have your number (look on the tax forms), then you can just get the card replaced. If you don't have a number for some stupid reason, apply for one once you've got the birth certificate.

Information on that is at SSA.GOV

You can go to your high school and get a copy of your birth certificate in your school records. Your social security number should be on your records somewhere.

That's probably highly dependent on location. I never provide any school at any level with a birth certificate.

I have never had a school retain a copy of my kids' birth certificates. Nor has one ever asked for a SSN - there's frankly no need for a school to have that information.
