What is the name of your state? Maine

I found out my husband of 25 years has been cheating on me. I feel that I should be able to keep the house. He wants equity from it. This would put me in financial hardship. Is there a law that states I must buy him out? What about the pain and suffering I've had to endure while he has been lying. He and his girlfriend have been seeing each other for over a year now. :(

You really need to get yourself a consult with an attorney....and you most likely need to hire one. There isn't a law that says that you have to buy him out....but there is a law that states that he is entitled to his fair share of the marital assets.

However......you may be able to trade his share of the equity for your share in other assets. Does he have an IRA or 401K? That is a marital asset as well....as would be yours if you have one.

Okay. Welcome to life.

I feel that I should be able to keep the house.
Why?? He obviously feels that you are missing something to.... so he has just as equal a claim to the house. What makes your situation special??

He wants equity from it. This would put me in financial hardship.
Again, so what?? Welcome to life and reality.

Is there a law that states I must buy him out?
Nope. You can move out. But both of you will still be owners and both of you will still be liable for any mortgage.

What about the pain and suffering I've had to endure while he has been lying.
What about it? Life happens. Accept it. You don't get any special reward due to it.

He and his girlfriend have been seeing each other for over a year now.
Good for them.

You were not harassed. You were, however, told the truth WITHOUT the sugar coating.

Did/Have you financially contributed to downpayment and/or mortgage payments at all? If you can't afford to support yourself, you need to get a job, like yesterday.

"Pain and suffering"!!!!! Surely you realise that you are not the first wife to ever be left for another woman, and surely you realise that not every cheated wife gets rich because hubby found happiness with someone else?

Then you need to ask yourself what you will do when your ex sues you for alimony claiming that your constant nagging and masterbation caused him to seek comfort in whatever hooker he could find.

pain and suffering! That's a good one.

Get the point?

Definition of masterbation: Prefering the dominant position in the relationship.
Masturbation... oh heck we won't go there.
