What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

I came to US in J1 visa for an exchange program from AU pair on Jan , 2008 to work for a host family. I have valid visa till Oct ,2008 . However, when I came here I could not start working with the host family. Since then I am statying with my relatives. I want to change my visa to F1 which is only possible if I am already not out of status.

Is there any way I can find whether I still have valid status? What are my options if I am already out of status?

Please help!

Regards,
Spur

You are obviously NOT in valid status if you are not working according to the terms of your J-1. A change of status will most likely not be possible and you'd have to go to your home country for consular processing for F-1 visa.
