land transfer to spouse with out will

My father-in-law passed away about two months ago. He owned a piece of land, just in his name. My mother-in-law was wondering what she needs to transfer the land into her name. He died unexpected, without leaving a will. We live in the city of O'Fallon, Missouri. St. Charles county. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. I am not a legal person, but I do live in St Charles County,
The best place to start is the county probate office or a lawyer. My understanding is that anything that has his name alone on it has to be probated.
I hope it works out.
