Hopefully someone can help me out here. I live in North Carolina.
Recently our landlord came to me and said that I had to get rid of my cats. He said we're only allowed two pets (this is on our lease). But... we've been with this landlord for almost two years and he knew we had the cats from the very day that we moved in and never said anything. We also have two dogs.
We live on a dirt road, surrounded by his other tenants that have pets galore! One neighbor literally has a farm: ducks, chickens, rabbits, dogs, cats, etc. One neighbor has four dogs, two cats, and a bird, and a neighbor that just recently moved out had two dogs, and four cats. Our new neighbor has a dog and two cats. He hasn't said a word to the other tenants just us. Is this fair? And can we do anything about it?
Another thing is that he says we're two months behind, I think we only owe for this month, although he never gave us receipts and we never asked for them. We're late most of the time (as with all the tenants according to the landlords own mouth) but we always pay our rent before the month is out. I know this isn't good, but that's how we do. Now he's evicting us. Again he's singling us out, because everyone else is late with their payments too. When I asked him to show me our payment record he printed it off his computer and brought it to me, but just leafed through it, because the other tenants were on the page too. So I really don't know what the copy says.
Any help is much appreciated. So is this landlord discrimination? Or am I just up the creek?
Thanks in advance!
Karen
