Landlord found dead.......where do we go from here?

We just found out that our landlord was found dead in his home. The only family he had, as far as we know of, is an aunt and two cousins. He had no will that we know of. We lave lived here for about 4 years paying $200.00/ month rent It is an old 2 story farmhouse. there was no paperwork involved, everything was handled with hand shakes. How soon can we be evicted? Do we have any rights? we live in NC.

Typically your monthly rent would now go to the estate of the deceased. Until you know the status of the estate, there is not much you can do!

Therefore, gather up your rent receipts, because you will need them to settle with the estate. Put the rent money aside every month so that you have it when it is determined who you need to pay. If this takes months to resolve and you can't pay the back rent, that will not be good.

I hope you have some way of proving that the rent was $200 a month. I have a feeling that the executor is going to find that hard to believe!

I would contact all YOUR family members, and see who will lend you $5-10 maybe $20,000 for a down payment on the house.

Having a wiling financialy qualified buyer might make the ESTATE sell it to you at 20 or 30 % LESS then market value, just so they wont have to deal with it,

It could be the BEST deal you will ever get... in your lifetime!
