I live in Washington state.

My husband and I just bought a house and it closes on March 29th. We gave notice to our landlord that we would like to stay until April 8th and asked her for a pro-rated amount. She said that we have to leave by the 31st of March or have to pay a full months rent for April. We have only signed a 6 month lease and have now lived there 1 1/2 yrs. Since we gave a proper amount of notice is there really a law saying we have to pay for 1 month rent even if we move out sooner than the end of April? (even 1 day into April would be a full months rent) thanks for your advice in advance.

You are buying a house and you are that cheap and hateful to your Landlord?.....

One of the perks of being a landlord is that you are ENTITLED by LAW not to lose one days rent.

So Unless you have someone lined up, and the landlord signs a lease with them, to start paying on April 8th, YOU owe for the whole month, since the vast majority of apartments rent is paid on the 1st!

Sorry to see that you think were being cheap, However being that we had no say in the closing date, Are puting forth everything we have to get into the house and would also be out by the first. I don't think that we are being cheap. anyway thanks for the 2 bits. You get prorated when you move in, Why wouldn't you get prorated when give the proper # of day notice and be moved out by that date... Seems kinda oneway to me.

NO its NOT one way.......

Ever stop and think....if i started paying the landlord on the 10th, who paid for days 1 to 9?

Did the landlord LOSE 9 days of rent, OR did the landlord DEDUCT the 9 days rent from the last tenants security deposit......which is legal.
