I am a student from Oklahoma and I was renting an upstairs bedroom from a property owner who resided downstairs in the same residence. We never had a contract or any written terms in place. When I moved in, I paid a security deposit and first months rent by money order. In November, I moved out (with a weeks notice) because I found an apartment closer to school. He would like to keep my security deposit and wants December rent even though I was not living there for that month. I do not feel I need to pay him December rent since I moved out on Nov 10th. Also, I do not have the finances to give him this extra money. He has been calling the Dean at my college and my family and friends weekly harassing them about the nonpayment of things I don't owe him. They are getting tired of it. What can I do?

Use your research skills and read the L/T laws. L is entitled to damages since you did not give proper notice to vacate.

Home Guru:

That may be correct, but I see no section regarding his ability to harass my acquaintances for the december rent.
It looks to me that I should be able to file a countercomplaint if this became a court issue for legal landlord misconduct and retaliatory behavior on his part.

You are absolutely correct. A+

You see no section in the L/T laws because there is no such section pertainng to L calling a school dean and friends of T to collect rent payment.
