Hi,
Please advise me. My landlord has increased my rent in the State of New Jersey from $905 to $975. I initially signed a 1 year lease for $775, it increased a year later to $785 and then to $805. During the last year, I also purchased a garage (+$100) and that increased my rent to $905. Now it has gone up to $975 (875 + 100 for grg) from $905. This landlord is not friendly, does not provide any way to contact her except via letters. What is insane is the rest of the people in my complex are still paying the average less than $800 a month. I have not asked the other tenants but I know it off the top of my head. Somehow, I feel I am being discriminated against. I feel as she assumes since I can own a garage, she increase the rent and I will be able to afford it. I have never been late on a payment, am on excellent terms with my neighbors.
1.) Is she allowed to increase the rent at such a rate in the State of New Jersey?
2.) If I want to negotiate a long term contract, on what basis can she refuse?
3.) Can this amount discrimination?
Please advise me as to what I should do? Any extra information will be very helpful.
Thank you.
