Last year I moved out of an apartment two months before my lease was up because I bought a home. My landlord rented the apartment immediately and the new tenent moved in within days of my leaving. I left the apartment in pristine condition. Although the apartment was occupied right away, the landlord refused to refund my deposit of one month's rent because I broke my lease. Shouldn't they had given me my deposit back?

It depends on the nature of the deposit and your local laws. If the deposit was non- refundable or if the landlord can show expenses in trying to find a new renter or preparing to rerent, he may be justified in keeping the deposit. You may try to look up your local renters laws... they may provide conditions and limitations on keeping deposits.
