I live in Hawaii, Maui County. I have lived in my home 3-1/2 years. I have never been late on my rent, and I have taken extremely good care of the property. My landlords recently put the house on the market for sale. They are insisting that I allow their real estate agent, who is very rude, to show the property anytime she wants. I am being harrassed by the agent, with threatening phone calls, and screaming at me over the phone.

What are my rights as a tenant. I am in the process of finding another place to live, in the meantime, am I required to let their agent in to show the property? Do I have any rights to privacy as a tenant? Can I legally refuse top allow the property to be shown until I can find another place and live? Please advise. Mahalo!

My response:

Do you see all those little numbers at the bottom of the main page of this BB? Those are pages that have responses to the same and similar question that you have. Click on those numbers. Go through them (It's a job, but you'll have to do it). There, you'll find some very good responses by Tracey, and others.

Good luck.

your question is answered in "Landlord destroyed property before prior to my completed move out.", a few posts below yours. I even quoted the appropriate laws there - talk about good timing!

This is not legal advice and you are not my client. Double check everything with your own attorney and your state's laws.

This is in response to your Realtor issue. Write a letter to her directly stating that you will not tolerate her threats, yelling etc. and copy the landlord, Maui Board of Realtors, the Hawaii Association of Realtors, the Hawaii Real Estate Commission and State Office of Consumer Protection, Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO). You can also file separate complaints with the various boards and agencies.
