What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois

I recently moved from Illinois to Ohio to pursue a job. I had six months remaining on my lease in Illinois (January - June 09). The landlord provided me with an invoice stating my intentions to show to my new leasing company and also provided a receipt showing that I had paid the remaining six months rent at time of departure. I recently found out that the landlord had rented the unit to someone else starting at the beginning in March. I know I owe for January and February as the apartment was empty, but now that someone has moved in can they collect rent from two people? Is it possible to get them to refund the four months I have paid where they will be receiving other rent?

Yes, you should be able to have the extra rent returned. Sue the bad guy...but you'll have to do it in IL
