landlord refuses to return my deposit

I was a tenant in Charlotte, NC this summer, and 5 months after i moved out my landlord refuses to return my deposit. He refuses to send any sort of documentation if there is damage to the apartment, and claims that I am responsible for the state of the apartment for the next lease that was signed after I moved out because one of my roommate still lived there. what are my options now?
