What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD
I moved in an apartment managed by a big corporation. After one week I moved in, an unoccupied unit next door had a fire. We were told to leave at that night. After two days, we were told to evacuate in a few hours, or they would lock our door because the county government had decided that our apartment in uninhabitable.
We were mad and asked for compensation for moving expenses because the fire was happening in an unoccupied unit which was unlocked due to the neglects of the management people. The manager refused to compensate but promised to return all the deposits and remaining rental for the month. However, I noticed that the manager is faking on my move-out notice-after I signed the move-out notice, she wrote down that she offered us other units but we rejected-that was a lie, Before we moved out, we did ask her to put this offer in written paper but she simply refused.
Yesterday, I just received their notice-they do not plan to return any rental for the rest 20 days of this month. Then I onsulted with the legal aide office in the University. I was told that there had been numerous disputes between students and the property manager and the university students never received what they asked for.
I do not know what I can do now. They do not even tell other residents how the fire happened. I think it also put other residents' right behind because the same property had another arson two years ago!
