My husband and I have lived in a family friend's house for almost three years. We are currently buying our own home. We gave a thirty day notice and are now moving out. Since we gave our notice the landlord(family friend) has informed us that we owe her 7 months of back rent. This is untrue. We never signed a lease or made any deposits or anything. We however, do have proof that we paid the rent every month from our cancelled checks at the bank. My question is does the landlord have legal recourse towards us since we did not sign a lease or any kind of paperwork? I am worried that she may try to interfere with our new home mortgage or try to sue us? Help! I do not feel we should have to pay that we do not owe just because now she says we do. Please email me with advice or relief. [email protected]
Greatly desparate for help and advice.

Unless the landlord can prove you owe, then its just she probably has a drinking problem and sees her steady money being taken away from her.

Or else she would be glad that you are buying a new home and can fix up the house and chargea lot more rent....thats what a normal landlord would do!
