I am engaged in a legal dispute to recover a deposit on a property rental in Chicago, IL. I have filed complaints with various city and state regulatory agencies in hopes of recovering my deposit. Today, a City regulatory office held a hearing and found in my favor. They asked the real estate agent to refund my deposit based on my case and complaint. The agent's attorney offered 60% of the deposit to me as a negotiation. I declined that offer, according to the findings of the hearing investigator, that I am due back the full amount. They refused to refund the deposit. Their attorney threatened to file a defamation lawsuit against me, based on my complaints to city and state authorities. I have filed no lawsuit as of yet. I did not commit libel or slander, I presented my case, as well as various signed statements to five city and state authorities, and was honest and professional about it. Can filing complaints warrant a defamation lawsuit? There was no false information provided anywhere to anyone.
