Landlord wants my social security number

Can a landlord require me to provide my social security number? My apartment in New Jersey is under new management, and the landlord has sent out a questionaire to "update our files". I have been a tenant for 18 years.

It asks for my social security number, as well as my employment information. It looks similar to the information requested on a rental application. However, the last time I filled one out was back in March, 1983.

What information can a landlord legally require from a tenant in NJ?
