I recently rented an apartment from my friend in RI. We had a month to month agreement of $550 / month. I paid rent in a timely fashion and the apartment is is good condition. However, after a minor falling out she has decided to amend the agreement. I am now ( after 3 weeks notice) told that i have to pay 186.oo per week.! This seems illegal to me that she can raise the rent a staggering $380 a month! is this legal? What is my recourse? and should I move????? help!!

Landlord was a friend and Jeremiah was a bullfrog.

Dear RN in RI:

Read the L/T laws. Notice must be in writing and be given at least 30 days in advance.

Hey leslie......

You made 2 BIG misteeaks ...first renting from a friend, and NOT having a years lease.

Then it would have been Illegal to raise the rent untill the lease was over.
