What is the name of your state? Colorado

Just had a guy serve me some some papers tonight at 9:30pm about some Citibank credit card that I seriously do not recognize in the slightest. In all that paperwork, all I could find were the last four digits of this supposed credit card that they now say I owe $950 on. Is my first line of defense a letter of Debt verification? I am just getting tired of this, seems like anyone can get some legal looking letters and put some numbers and accounts on it and then scare you by saying you have a court date, all in order to scare you into paying so your credit is not ruined. I don't mind paying a debt I owe but this seems and felt shady. This firm called Velocity Investments apparently bought this debt and has now hired this lawyer to get some money. Please advise and thanks in advance.

Have you been sued? If so, then it's probably too late to ask for validation. You COULD try calling Citibank to get more information on the account (see if it is yours). You could also try calling the collection agency, but they're not going to have a whole lot of information about the account itself. But see if they have your SS# right for starters. It could just be a mix-up. Have you ever had a citibank card? Or perhaps a card from another bank that got bought by citibank? You can pull your credit reports too.
