i have been in a divorce fight for nearly 2 years on a marriage that lasted less than 1 year. we are almost near the end of the battle (i hope), but my lawyer informed me that he is retiring next month due to personal reasons and can not continue with my case. in the meantime, he is "making phone calls" to find me another lawyer and he has informed me that i will need to pay another retainer to the new lawyer. is this ethical? can he charge me for "making calls" to find me a new lawyer as a result of his decision to retire? does my present lawyer have any obligation to reimburse me for some of the fees since the new lawyer will cost money just to read the briefs and get caught up on the case? any thoughts? thanks.
