I called a motel we've stayed at many times in the past and made reservations for 2 rooms and was given a confirmation number however, at the end of our conversation I stated that I wanted to be picked up at the Ferry Terminal and be returnrd there the next morning as we have done many times before. I was told that their van had broken down and that they nolonger offered that srevice. I stated that because of that it would do me no good to stay there and to cancel my reservation.

When I arrived home from my vacation I found out they charged me for the 2 rooms.. I sent a letter to them and they said that because I didn't ask for a confirmation of the cancellation that they have every right to charge me and there is nothing they can do.

what can I do? Do I have to go to their town?

Next time use Motel 6. They would not do that to ya and they keep the light on for ya.
Dispute the charges with your credit card company by sending them a certified letter and a copy of your letter to Motel deep 6.
