I recently was looking for an apartment is Wisconsin, Washington County. I found a apartment, paid my security deposit, and signed a lease. About two weeks later I called my new landlord to tell him that I would not be needing the apartment because I decided on not moving. The landlord had about one month before the new move-in date was effective. He is trying to keep my deposit and charge me with expenses he had it trying to find a new tenant. Do I have any rights to get my security deposit back, I did give him enough notice to find someone to rent the apartment?

Since you made the decesion not to occupy the apartment the landlord had expenses in re renting it, so yes he has a right to deduct his expenses from your security deposit,

So you want to know if you can get any of it back....

This requires someone who knows how to use a calcualtor..

Your deposit- landlords expenses- any rental days lost- any legal fees- any postage- and other secretarial costs- any credit checks screening costs, gas, his time to show the apartment, brokers fees equals... whats left

Then you can sue for whats left in small claims court.
