What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

When you initially sign a lease with your LL do they have to give you a copy of the lease even if you don't ask for one or assume they'll just give you or mail you a copy?

if the answer to that question is yes, what does it mean if they don't give you one? is it not legal until they give you a copy?

Yes, the LL should give you a copy. If they didn't/haven't, you should ask for one.

If they haven't given you one, it doesn't make the lease void. You signed it, they signed it, that's what makes it valid - not whether or not you received your copy. And you can bet if there's an issue, the LL will certainly pull out a copy to back themselves up.

Always insist upon signing a lease that there be two copies .

One for you and one for the LL .

There is no reference that the LL must give you a copy ,although they should .
