My sister attended the Akron Institute. Her first day of class was May 8th, 2006. The school requires medical paperwork to be completed in order to attend. My sister completed the paperwork. It was signed and dated May 23rd by the doctor. She then went to the school to hand in. The receptionist took the paperwork, made copies, and returned the originals back to her. A school official approached my sister on 7/17/2006 and informed her she has been dismissed because of missing medical forms. My sister happen to have one of the forms on her person and gave that to the official. The official took the paper, but insisted that she is still dismissed. My sister had went back to the school the next day to persuade them otherwise armed with all the required and properly dated medical forms. The school continued to blow her off. I finally contacted the Director, on Friday 7/21 who did answer all my questions. He states she was notified four times and regardless of her excellent attendance, B average, on time monthly payments, and correct medical forms; she is dismissed along with 23 other students this year. I found that interesting. Apparently the same amount of students each year seem to be dismissed for missing medical forms. Advise to the students is reapply and come back next year. The program is a 10 month program so the students are more then welcome to reapply and pay tuition next year. The school will not investigate their own actions to see who really is at fault. My investigation had led me to believe the fault is with improper training of the staff. The school's policy states medical forms are required within 45 days from the first day of class. The policy does not discuss how the students are notified if they do not meet the dealine, how the dismissal process works, or if original medical paperwork is required. The school argues that since my sister did present original paperwork on the 17th and 18th that is evidence that she never originally turned it in. The Director states that the school requires original documents or faxed. My sister did submit the documents in person, but the original physical examination form was returned to her by the receptionist. She never possed an original hepatitis form because the doctor has it. We called to the doctor and verified. Every student would be doing similiar things. What options do we have. The school is final on their decision and actually expects my sister to pay this months bills.
