i live in north carolina. i have been told that i may be moved to a different shift because i am getting too close to the people on my shift. by close i mean i am friends with these people. my boss does not like the people i am friends with. is this some type of discrimination against me?

Let me know if you get any interesting responses. I am a supervisor who was moved from my bid position (day shift supervisor) back to evening shift supervisor for exactly that reason. My employer even went so far as to accuse me of "fraternizing" with one of my subordinates. I am scheduled for a disciplinary hearing for "alleged fraternization" and he writes me up every time that he sees me speak to this guy, even though I am no longer his supervisor. The good news is that I have an attorney and we are going to court!

managers / supervisors must keep a professional and nonbiased distance between themselves and their subordinates. it is a good idea to not become friends / pals / buddies with subs. your responsibilities are to the company, not to pals and when you have to be the heavy with the pals under your supervision, they won't be your pals anymore and you won't have a job if you don't do it. your supervisor could be helping you, not hurting you. can you ask your supervisor to let you try again on this shift and not be too friendly with your subs? it doesn't seem like your supervisor is doing anything wrong if your shift is changed. if you are from NC, be glad you even have a job, thanks to NAFTA and TAA.

I don't see it as illegal discrimination, unless other people in your situation who are of a different race, age, gender etc. have been treated differently and you have reason to believe that the difference is BECAUSE of the different race, age, gender and so on. The poster above me makes an excellent point; it is extremely difficult to manage employees effectively if you are close friends with them. What do you do if one of your friends has to be disciplined, or laid off? Moving you to a different area or shift is not illegal, and is a better solution than firing you, which would also have been legal.
