What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Connecticut

I moved out from my husband over a month ago. Our living situation was not safe and with no job for him and I was staying home with our little ones, per his request, and no way for him to be able to pay for it, I decided to leave to my parents.

I am on foodstamps and am looking for a job, but paying for things that are non food is getting difficult. I wanted to see if applying for legal seperation helps with that, in that cash assistance can help me out until I get a steady income. With my husband still unemployed he can't afford any child support but I need help some advice and if it's legally seperating helps with anything.

A legal separation in CT is the same as a divorce, except that neither of you can remarry. If you're going to divorce him, I recommend you go forward with that, and skip the separation.

Talk to your local Department of Social Services office and ask them what benefits are available to you, including cash assistance and job training. You may be surprised at what is available.
