i live in calif. my paycheck is currently being garnished from a
creditor. i received a notice from the
county assesors office today stating
that there had been a judgement
against me and that there was going
to be a lein put on my property. i am
a renter. i rent a room from my sister. i pay half the rent and utilities. the house is in her name.
i do not own any real property at all.
can they really put a lein on a piece
of property that doesn't belong to me?

NO, they can NOT. I'd be willing to bet the judgment creditor is assuming that the woman's name on the property is your WIFE and not your sister. They're thinking its community property. You need to call the assessor's office ASAP and explain to them that you are NOT on the deed and the woman is NOT your wife but your SISTER.
