What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

California

Last year I lent a friend $1500 which he promised to pay back within 3 months. It's been over a year and he is now avoiding me and not paying it back. Within 6 months of borrowing this money, he also took $500 from me (I had asked him to get some cash I had left with my brother and to transfer it to me, but instead he took the cash and spent it). I have everything in email correspondence, plus the transfer notices to him from my bank. What can I do to get repaid?

Is it possible to do that while out of the country? And is there a time limit for when I can do this? I'm not sure when I will be back in Los Angeles or for how long, when I do go back.

The statute of limitations for verbal contracts (The $1500) in California is two years.

The statute of limitations for conversion (the $500) in California is three years.

You should have called the police when he embezzled your $500.

Well you didn't mention that. You will need to sue him here. Your travel expenses are not recoverable.

Look at it this way. You paid $1,500 to get rid of this person.
