What is the name of your state? OH

Are my husband and I considered the “general contractor” when we build our small retirement home ourselves (literally) on our vacant land? Our Auto Insurance currently covers liability on the land as long as there are no structures. But how do we carry liability coverage once we start building? I’ve be researching Comprehensive Personal Liability policies, but so far they all say “Dwellings under renovation or construction, where the insured is not acting as general contractor”. Does this mean as owners/builders we are not eligible for liability coverage? Thank you for your help! What is the name of your state?

**A: the answer is yes to your 2 questions. What are you not talking with your insurance agent?

Did you read your auto policy?

I'm curious why you say your auto liability extends to vacant land. Did you mean to say your existing homeowner's insurance extended liability to the vacant land?

I apologize. The Liab on the Homeowner's covers the vacant land. The Umbrella endorsement on the Auto increases the Liab coverage for both Auto and Homeowner's.

Learned the hard way that asking too many questions can backfire. Another company insured the land for several years. Shortly after we asked them some questions about building a home on the land we received a cancellation notice. We were flabbergasted. The "notes" the agent took of the phone converstion were not accurate. The company was going to "re-evaluate" their decision to cancel but there was no way we would continue doing business with them. Want to make sure we have a backup plan before asking current company any questions.

Just want to be clear....

Please make sure your homeowner's policy has a specific endorsement extending liability to that specific piece of property. Don't assume there is automatic coverage. I realize I'm being nit-picky; but, too many people assume too many things about their insurance.

I'm surprised your first company cancelled you for having vacant land (unless there was some hazard associated with the land.) Good for you on getting replacement coverage so quickly.
